The Sumida ESMIT-4180/C Series Isolation Transformer is the latest entry into Sumida’s line of low-profile, surface mounted isolation transformers. It was developed to better respond to the demands of the embedded-circuit based products, including automotive battery monitoring, high-speed modems and other circuits. As an example, the ESMIT-4180/C is included in the reference design for the NXP Freescale MC33771 and MC33664 High Voltage Battery Cell Controller and Transformer Physical Layer. This comprises a high-voltage battery management system.

The Sumida ESMIT-4180/C offers AEC-Q200 certification and a very high, 3,750 volt RMS, one second isolation capability (equivalent to a full minute at 3,000 volts RMS). GE Oil & Gas acquired Cameron’s reciprocating compressors division in January to kick off the new year. This, coupled with GE’s recent purchase of Alstom’s Power and Grid business, solidified its position as a leading player in the oil & gas sector. IHS estimates that GE turbines and compressors sold into oil and gas applications account for just less than 35% of global capacity, which is roughly 10-15% more than Siemens, including its newly acquired Rolls Royce product lineup. With Siemens’ recent announcement that it will purchase leading gas compressor and turbine supplier Dresser-Rand Group Inc. (NYSE: DRC), the company is well-poised to stake its claim as a heavyweight rival to GE.

This acquisition is not a surprise, though the timing is rather unexpected. Just last week it appeared as though Dresser-Rand was entertaining the possibility of a merger with another company that is well positioned in the oil and gas sector, the Swiss industrial pump manufacturer Sulzer. Talks of a potential merger between Sulzer and Dresser-Rand seem to have contributed to a recent spike in DRC’s stock price, requiring a larger investment by Siemens to win the bid for the compressor and turbine provider. In fact, the acquisition cost Siemens $83 per DRC share, a premium of roughly 37% to the share price back in July before acquisition talks were public knowledge. Siemens appears to be quite confident in its newest investment despite the premium. “The valuation is a stretch, but strategically it makes sense,” said Volker Stoll, a Stuttgart-based analyst at Landesbank Baden-Wuerttemberg.[Continue reading →]

Newark, CA – The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA®) announced the release of the DisplayPort 1.3 audio / video (A/V) standard. An update to the widely used DisplayPort 1.2a standard, this latest version increases the maximum link bandwidth to 32.4 Gbps, with each of four lanes running at a link rate of 8.1 Gbps/lane—a 50% increase from the previous version of the DisplayPort standard. Yet that’s what ended up happening, as the JPEG Encoder IP Core MSSS licensed from CAST now plays a key role in getting Curiosity Rover’s amazing photos of Mars—and itself—back down to Earth.

Appropriate choices for analyzing signals in the frequency domain can often improve the overall system during the concept, development, and/or testing phase of many data acquisition systems.Frequency domain analysis plays an important role in the design and testing of many militarized systems, including wireless communications, remote sensing, radar processing, audio processing (such as speech recognition/authentication, watermarking, and compression/VoIP), and more. The development process of an embedded computing military application often requires sampling real-world physical systems through a data acquisition process that results in a digital representation of those signals.

Although the data representing these signals is most often sampled in the time domain, many applications engineers find it easier – and more conceptually clear – to work with the data in the frequency domain. This is because of the many engineering relationships governing information, which are typically described in the frequency domain. A thorough frequency analysis of the data being acquired and processed can facilitate the retrieval of subtle information contained within the signal and provide valuable insight into the real-world environment that will be encountered.
