Spectrum\'s M2p platform board Grosshansdorf, Germany - 8 November 2017. Spectrum Instrumentation announces the first products of a completely new designed digitizer card series. It consists of the new platform-board M2p, which will be the PCIe base for all upcoming products for the next years. The other part is the new 59xx module, which will be available in many variations. M2p platform and 59xx module form 13 different new digitizer cards with lots of options regarding speed and channels.

Oliver Rovini, CTO at Spectrum, said: "These products will be the heart of a new mid-range digitizer series which is designed to cover signal frequencies from 1 MHz to 40 MHz. Within that range, the new units will smoothly replace all our current 12, 14 and 16-bit models giving our existing customers an easy upgrade path with a lot of technical advantages. As such, we see many applications for these new products in the areas of Ultrasound, Laser, Lidar, Radar, Automotive and big physics experiments."[Continue reading →]

ANDOVER, Mass. - Nov. 1, 2017 - Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com) announced the BuiltSAFE™ GS Multi-Core Renderer for the Xilinx® Zynq® UltraScale+™ MPSoC family. Part of the BuiltSAFE Graphics Suite, the Multi-Core Renderer runs on the multi-core ARM® Cortex® A53 processor inside the MPSoC and is certifiable to DO-178C at the highest design assurance level (DAL-A) as well as the highest Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL D).

The BuiltSAFE GS Multi-Core Renderer is a high performance, small footprint OpenGL library designed to render highly complex 3D graphics in safety-critical embedded systems. Unlike traditional software renderers that run on a single CPU core, the performance of the Multi-Core Renderer scales up with more CPU cores. Because it runs on the CPU, the Multi-Core Renderer enables high-quality graphics applications to be run on Zynq Ultrascale+ CG variants, which are not equipped with a hardware graphics core. Even variants of the Zynq Ultrascale+ that do include a graphics core can benefit from the easier certification processes of the Multi-Core Renderer. [Continue reading →]

Radar, communications, and SIGINT [signals intelligence] systems have traditionally combined sensor processing, data conversion, and signal processing hardware within single enclosures or equipment racks. Analog signals for antennas, transducers and other sensors were connected through cables, often causing loss and interference along the way. However, enabled by new data converter and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology and evolving open embedded computing standards, system designers can now deploy small-form-factor (SFF) subsystems at each sensor site for distributed signal acquisition and preprocessing. Digitized signals are then delivered through optical cables, providing higher signal quality over longer connection distances while reducing size, weight, cost, and maintenance.[Continue reading →]

The design of radio equipment for the military market has evolved significantly from the use of transistor-based circuits to specialized and powerful integrated circuits (ICs). Designs may be geared towards rigid, single-purpose platforms or towards flexible, application-agnostic systems with dedicated digital signal processors (DSPs), such as software-defined radio (SDR). The one thing all of these approaches have in common: difficulty in estimating and understanding the cost/performance trade-offs of new designs.[Continue reading →]

ANDOVER, Mass. - Sept. 14, 2017 - Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com) announced the availability of its BuiltSAFE™ GS Multi-Core Renderer. Part of the BuiltSAFE Graphics Suite, the software renderer runs on a multi-core CPU and is certifiable to DO-178C at the highest design assurance level (DAL A) as well as ASIL D for automotive safety. The multi-core implementation overcomes the performance issues typically associated with software-only graphics solutions. By using scalable CPU-based graphics, this software-only solution eliminates the need to certify GPU hardware for the highest levels of safety and address the obsolescence issues associated with GPU devices and the associated graphics memory chips.

For systems that include a GPU, the BuiltSAFE GS Multi-Core Renderer can be part of a hybrid solution that uses software-based graphics on the CPU for DAL A level processing and GPU graphics for the highest performance where only DAL C or lower levels of assurance is required. This configuration can be particularly useful in avionics systems where the primary flight display elements need to operate at DAL A whereas the mission display elements can operate at DAL C and can benefit from increased graphics capabilities.[Continue reading →]

Electronic warfare (EW), the use of the electromagnetic spectrum to foil enemy forces and protect friendly ones, is perhaps the most time-sensitive of all the weapons in the military arsenal: a matter of nanoseconds could make the difference between life and death. That's why latency is so critical to EW processing systems. If a radar-guided missile is heading for your aircraft at Mach 5, the aircraft's radar jammer had better be quick - quick to take in the signal, manipulate it, and retransmit it to fool the adversary with false targets or misleading data on size, distance, heading, speed. Digital RF memories (DRFMs), the specialized RF jammers that do just that, require receive-response latencies of 20 to 100 nanoseconds. Compared to radars - which transmit pulses and receive echoes - DRFMs - which receive pulses and retransmit the signals modulated with jamming techniques - have much more stringent latency requirements.[Continue reading →]

Security breaches of in-vehicle onboard computers and networks are becoming more prevalent. Recent demonstrations range from remotely shutting down an engine to causing vehicle brakes to malfunction. Such attacks are enabled by the lack of built-in security for the vehicle’s controller area network (CAN) bus—the technology linking most onboard computers. CAN has been a reliable workhorse for the automotive industry for decades, yet it was developed before the Internet, so its inventors never considered malicious remote actors having access to the bus. By compromising a network-enabled onboard computer, a sophisticated hacker can gain access to other critical vehicle systems via CAN, leading to the dangerous security breaches recently reported in the media.[Continue reading →]
