Laser testing at IAP offices Unloading of the mobile LIDAR onto the fast ice in front of the Australian Antarctic station Davis (69° S) from the ice breaker \"Aurora Australis\" Grosshansdorf, Germany - 12. December 2018. Atmospheric research uses pulsed laser beams to measure temperature and wind speed along the beams by measuring the Doppler shifted and backscattered light at 100 km height in the atmosphere. The returning light signals are very weak and can be blocked by sunlight, but The Leibniz Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IAP) has solved this problem: they developed the world's only portable instrument that can be used during the daytime and it has already provided new insights into Antarctic atmospheric conditions. This new generation of compact and reliable systems uses a novel, diode-pumped laser and, at its heart, are a Spectrum Instrumentation Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) and two Digitizers that provide the extremely high speed, sensitivity and real-time capability required.

The measuring technique is called Doppler resonance LIDAR as the light is backscattered by tuning the laser precisely to a resonance transition of a metal atom. The backscattered signals are extremely weak (single photons per laser pulse) and are almost completely drowned out by solar radiation during the day. The difference between night and day measurements is that there is 100,000,000 times more background noise during the day from the sun.[Continue reading →]

ANDOVER, Mass.  Oct. 25, 2018  Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com) announced the start of customer engagements for the first BuiltSECURE™ 16GB high density double data rate fourth-generation synchronous dynamic random-access memory (DDR4 SDRAM) in a rugged, ultra-compact 16mm x 23mm ball grid array (BGA) package. The Company’s new product was designed using a new packaging technology that doubles the number of the devices embedded in a single package without compromising performance or reliability. While delivering immediate benefits to defense prime contractors requiring DDR4 memory today, it also provides a low-risk path forward to commercializing fifth-generation (DDR5) memory devices with 5 GB/s data transfer speeds. Mercury’s new rugged DDR4 device is ideally suited to address the need for memory resident data in unmanned systems applications and real-time execution of artificial intelligence (AI).

Conventional three-dimensional (3D) packaging technologies embed multiple memory devices in a single package to meet the processing demands of space-constrained military systems. Stacking multiple devices in a single package inherently degrades the signal integrity performance, resulting in low data transfer speeds and compromised long-term reliability performance. The new packaging technology commercialized in the 16GB BuiltSECURE memory device addresses these challenges by significantly reducing crosstalk and return loss while doubling the number of devices embedded in a single package compared to the similar-sized 8GB device. This new military-hardened product supports the high-speed bus rates of today’s fastest processors and field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, with data transfer rates of up to 2666 MB/s while operating over an extended temperature range of -55 to +125 °C. NEW HIGH SPEED RECORDER 40 GBE DATA RECORDER CAPTURES >6 GB/S OF STREAMING DATA SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES INDUSTRY CONFERENCE (SOFIC) 2018, TAMPA, Fla. (Booth #1919) – May 21, 2018 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division today introduced the industry’s first two-channel 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) digital data recorder designed to address the extremely high bandwidth data capture requirements of today’s most demanding ISR applications. The new High Speed Recorder 40 GbE (HSR40) is a SWaP-optimized digital data recorder that can capture UDP or TCP/IP data from two 40 GbE interfaces at sustained rates of over 6 GB/s. The challenge of capturing wire-rate data from today’s compute intensive ISR sensor platforms puts new meaning to the old metaphor “drinking from a firehose.” Some platforms have hundreds of cameras and other sensors generating data that needs to be captured and stored. What’s more, these critical sensor systems can’t be throttled in order for the recording system to catch up with the flow of data.

“Curtiss-Wright is committed to bringing the most advanced, rugged digital data recorder solutions to our Military and Aerospace customers,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “We are proud to announce the industry’s highest performance two-channel 40 Gigabit Ethernet data recorder, the new HSR40, which delivers unprecedented data capture capability to deployed ISR applications. Army Aviation Mission Solutions Summit (Booth #1038), NASHVILLE, Tenn. - April 25, 2018 - Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com) and Green Hills Software® today announced a close collaboration that has revolutionized the capabilities, performance and safety of next- generation flight display systems using multicore processor architectures. Mercury’s BuiltSAFE™ hardware and software portfolio delivers industry-leading size, weight and power (SwaP) for avionics computers and display systems, with a particular emphasis on mission systems, enhanced vision systems (EVS) and synthetic vision (SVS) systems for degraded visual environments (DVE).

Leveraging hundreds of person-years of in-house experience in safety-certified display computer design, Mercury Systems has launched the ROCK-2 avionics subsystem and BuiltSAFE OpenGL graphics suite, optimized to take advantage of the CAST-32A and ARINC-653 (Section 2, Supplement 4) compliant multicore features of Green Hills’ INTEGRITY®-178 Time-Variant Unified Multi-Processing (tuMP) real-time operating system (RTOS). This enables multiple independent safety and/or security-critical applications to execute within the ROCK-2’s multicore operating environment in a predictable, bounded, and application-independent manner. The INTEGRITY-178 tuMP partition-enforcing scheduling mechanism results in a unified RTOS that provides practical time variant scheduling of both asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) applications simultaneously, along with the ability to create core affinity groups that define how cores will be utilized by the graphics (and other) applications. PicoVNA 106 Network Analyzer from Saelig Saelig Company, Inc. has introduced the Pico Technology PicoVNA 106 Low-Cost Vector Network Analyzer - an economical USB-controlled, professional-grade 300kHz to 6GHz Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) with excellent performance, portability, and affordability. Despite its small size and low cost, its full-function, minimal-error, ‘Quad RX’ four-receiver architecture supports both 8- and 12-term calibration without the uncorrectable switching errors, delays, and unreliability of traditional three-receiver designs. The instrument supports convenient calibration methods such as ‘enhanced isolation correction’ and ‘unknown thru’.

The PicoVNA 106 has a dynamic range of up to 118dB at 10Hz and only 0.005dB RMS trace noise at its maximum bandwidth of 140kHz. It can gather all four S-parameters at just 190usec per frequency point, so a 500 point 2-port S2P Touchstone file (compatible with many test, math, view and EDA simulation tools) is captured in less than 1/10 sec. This performance compares with other full-function VNAs that are more than four times as expensive. The PicoVNA 106 is even cost-effective as a high-dynamic-range scalar network analyzer where phase measurements are not needed, or even as a single-port vector reflectometer. The product also includes bias-Ts for the convenient injection of a bias or test stimulus. The PicoVNA 106 software's two utilities address gain compression (P1dB) and AM to PM. Both of these use a port power sweep at each test frequency, with both measurements extracted using second-order interpolation.[Continue reading →]
